I used Grow Rocks when I was fooling around with hydroponics. The ones I have (I have a whole bunch I'll sell cheap!) were 3/8-1/2 big. Definitely way to big for bonsai. Also, they are designed NOT to hold water because in hydroponics you constantly have water circulating around the roots. The rocks are stictly and only for holding the roots firm.

I think a person should stick real close to the basics that are tried and true. Once those are mastered, you can experiment with less valuable plant material. I'd stay with one of the excellent mixes discussed at length in another thread.
