Hi Patmac,

I think the wire is covering the tear? It's hard to see much in the photo.

You'd have a hard time bending a trunk that thick with aluminum wire, even if you apply it right. Raffia and a branch splitter would help. I can't see the extent of the tear but if it's less than half the circumference it will probably be okay.
