Do a search on this forum, and also Google for "maple pinching". This pinching should be started in early spring when the tree first leafs out, and continue throughout the growing season. This will increase ramification reduce internode length, and the resultant leaves will also be smaller. Your local club should have members who are experienced with this method as well, and can share their experience.
