Hi, you are correct in being concerned about the extreme temps of your area. Bonsai care CAN NOT be generalized for all locations. It can not even be grouped as to warm weather and cold weather climates. You are in a very unique area, as to temps and weather. You need to follow advise from someone who has knowledgeable about ultra high temperature areas.... not me!
I have heard of individuals in hot climates who use shade cloth and misting systems to aid their trees in living in their climate. I think you can grow trees in Vegas.... its just a challenge! But then again so can growing trees in the north east. And yes, outside is best...
When you obtain any new trees, try and get a tree(type) that is growing outside in your area. Native trees are best but those that have proven to adapt to the area are also good. Bonsai do require more attention then trees in the ground, but if it is growing around you it will be a good choice for Bonsai.
Good luck and try contacting a club if you can find one near you.
I found the info below with a google search perhaps that will be helpful! I do not have personal knowledge of this group!
The Las Vegas Bonsai Society will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Nevada Garden Club Center, 3333 W. Washington Ave. "How to Create a Forest-Style Bonsai" will be demonstrated 257-4768
