Lyn, my heart goes out to you. I wish there was an easy answer. A nursery may be one way. Another way may be the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. They have a large bonsai section there. Why not give them a call, and explain the situation to them. The worst they can do is say no.
If all else fails and you could send it to me, I would be proud and happy to care for it, and return it when the time is right.
Is there a tag on it? I used to consult with a large wholesale nursery concerning their bonsai products. They are located in Half Moon Bay, CA. It would be quite a coincidence if it came from them.
